Sunglasses are very popular by each and every ages, even the most popular fashion brands have their own sunglasses offers… Why prescription sunglasses?
Although very often we tend to consider eyewear as a form of decoration, sunglasses are first and foremost a protection of the delicate eye system from the impact of the ultraviolets. Special vision problems prevent lots of people from being able to wear sunglasses, which makes them even more exposed to various other eye health problems. This is the case with anyone who suffers from myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia. Prescription sunglasses could be a solution for improving sight and protecting eyes from the action of the UV radiation at the same time. On the one hand the UVA rays get absorbed in the body through the eye lens, and on the other, the UVB rays cause skin burn.

Prescription sunglasses represent a combination of regular glasses with a dark lens design. Prescription sunglasses use different types of lenses, and here we can count polarized lenses, anti-reflective lenses, blue blockers, photochromic lenses and gradient lenses. It is important to mention here, before going on with the description of prescription sunglasses, that you can only order this kind of eyewear based on an ophthalmologist’s recommendation and after careful medical examination. Some health condition such as eye surgery may require total prevention of sun exposure. This is why most often doctors prescribe sunglasses with  99 or 100% protection against UVA and UVB.

Some prescription sunglasses rely on a wraparound design that prevents the UV rays from entering from the sides. Here, the choice of the frame is everything because it should be large enough to allow for such protection. As for the glare, not only prescription sunglasses but most sunglasses in general have a special anti-reflective coating that ensures superior reflexion of the light. The amount of light that enters the eyes could also be limited by using mirror-coated lenses. One special mention here is that the design of the prescription glasses also depends on the stage of the eye health condition.

For instance, people who suffer from advanced myopia may require very thick lenses, which could be incompatible with most of the frames. There are other situations when two or more health problems are present, as one person could suffer from both astigmatism and myopia, to give just an example. Solutions may be available, but only a specialist will be able to tell you which is the best for you. Very few companies can provide such designs for low prices; the more complex the prescription sunglasses, the higher the price.

It is said that spending time in front of the computer can be detrimental to your eyes, however, I used to spend almost 10 hours a day in front of it and have never had any problems. Some have started wearing glasses after only a couple of years of intensive computer use, but I’ve used it for over 10 years and my sight was perfect.

Being very proud of my eye sight, I used to test it on different things such as moving cars, or reading small text on different things, from as far away as possible. My friends, however, started telling me to take care, because at one point my vision would certainly be affected.

Since my parents were telling me the same things as my friends, I decided to take up jogging. I spent some time online looking for the perfect jogging equipment, a good mp3 player, and the best time of the day to start. Armed with this knowledge, my jogging began, every morning.

I was really happy with my choice of equipment, as my sneakers made running much easier, and the SanDisk Sansa c250 2 GB  was a joy to listen to. Quite cheap, and with very good sound quality, the player really was much better than I had expected. I even ended up listening to music on it, instead of my computer, due to its better quality.

I don’t spend less time in front of the PC, but jogging has opened my eyes and I have started taking better care of my body. My physical condition is much better, and that is clearly visible, while my friends and family are very proud of my achievement. I personally like the idea that I can have better health while still enjoying doing what I love to do–computer work. There’s a fantastic feeling knowing that!

Appraising your PD:

This measurement is the distance between the centre of your pupils that is measured in millimetres.

Opticians do not tend to give out this measurement as it encourages patients to buy their spectacles from them whereas you can buy cheap spectacles online or designer glasses at a fraction of the price online. It is commonly recorded as one measure like 60 (60mm) but can also be presented as R 29 L 31. When written like this it is the individual distance from you right and left pupils to the centre of your nose.

When Varifocals, High Prescriptions or Prisms are ordered the measure is commonly split individually. On the whole, if you have a single vision prescription, it will be written down as one value.

If you do not know this measurement and don’t want to measure it yourself then most online opticians will make your PD the national average (63) for men and (60) for women.

Ask a family member or friend to physically measure your PD:

This will be by far the simplest means by obtaining your PD. Get your friend to sit directly opposite you and at the same height as you and ask them to put a ruler against your forehead and just above your eyes.

Next ask your friend to close their right eye and you then look directly into their left eye. Request your friend to slide the rule so that the zero value is in the centre of your right pupil and to sustain the rule very steady across your brow. Then ask your friend to close their left eye and for you to look directly into their right eye.

Your friend will then read off the measurement to the centre of your left pupil. And that is it! It really is that easy! Please see the diagram below to help you further.

Using your latest eyeglasses to evaluate you PD with help from a friend:

Check how well your eyeglasses sit on your face by putting them on and having a look. Request your assistant to stand opposite you and check on your lenses the placement of your pupils with a non lasting marker.

You should now see two lines directly infront of you whilst wearing your specs. Simply, remove your specs and measure the distance between the two markings. And that’s it! If the ruler shows 6 cm then your pupillary distance will be termed as 60. If the measurement is 6.3cm then your PD will be 63.

If you have a varifocal measurement, then just measure across from your right eye to the centre of your nose and then again from the centre of your nose to your left eye and record the individual readings for both your left and right eyes. If you aren’t buying sunglasses with prescription lenses in then don’t worry about what’s in this article.
