All of us, no matter who we are, face persistent change and adjustment in life. Noted change management writer, William Bridges, has identified a simple three-step model for understanding and coping with the transitions in our lives:
1. Endings
I appreciate this model because it is one of the few that I’ve seen that recognizes that all changes – whether the “good” ones or the “bad” ones – start with something ending in our lives. Despite how much we might be excited about the new venture (e.g., starting college, new job, getting married, relocation), the transformation first of all requires that we forfeit something.
We almost always have to release the well-known, the everyday, and the comfortable. This might involve changes to existing relationships, relocating from a community where we’ve lived for most of our lives, giving up our established position of “authority” or being the “go-to” person at the office. Possibly we’ll have to leave a social network that we’ve had for our entire lives. Friends with whom we attended school. A big comfortable house, with a terrific backyard for entertaining, plenty of room for the kids and all their friends. Possibly it’s something as simple as a quick and easy commute to work.
But, regardless of the type of change in our lives, it’s a good bet that the first thing(s) that we’ll notice are the things we are having to bid farewell.
2. Neutral Zone
The next phase of the process is I think the most difficult one. We’ve walked away from all the accepted, safe, comfortable, everyday things that we’ve trusted to expedite our every day decision-making processes, friends we can share our ups and downs with. We’ve had to release all the tried and true “safety nets” we’ve integrated into our lives: the insurance agent we’ve come to rely upon, our child’s teacher that we’ve been able to have some really good parent-teacher conversations with, the place of worship where we’ve become well established and have a solid social network.
The Neutral Zone is the time where all the “old stuff” has to be left behind, but the required new support structures haven’t yet been created, or if built, they are still still being firmed up and rather fragile.
Time in the Neutral Zone can be rather intimidating as you live in a state of novelty, ambiguity and uncertainty. But determination and perseverence are the attitudes essential to a successful trip through the Neutral Zone.
3. Beginnings
Slowly, over time, we begin to get things put in place for our new venture. If we’ve just started college, we’ve found all our classes, met the instructors, made some friends, and perhaps joined a fraternity, sorority or the tennis team. If beginning a new job, we’ve overcome the initial shock of being the new kid on the block, to having a definite role to perform, and we’ve gained knowledge and job competence. We’ve met our managers and many of our colleagues (perhaps we’re no longer the “newest” kid on the block). We’ve probably found a new home or apartment, unpacked most (if not all) the boxes. We know where the best grocery stores, drug stores, department stores, car repair shops, beauty salons, and emergency clinics are located.
Things are gradually settling into a daily pattern, and life is becoming more stable – and more predictable every day (although it will never become absolutely static, or static).
We’re incorporating the change and growing into our new roles and adapting to our new location.
All this takes time. The worst thing you can do is expect that it will come to pass overnight – it won’t. Give yourself, and your family, enough time and space, to adapt to the change – and they will!

The In-Between Generation
Do you find yourself numbered among the “Sandwich Generation”? By that, I mean folks who are both raising a family and also taking care of an extended family member who is unable to live alone.
If so, I would guess that you’re experiencing a lot of of pressure because of the large number of competing requirements placed upon you every day by your loved ones – and that doesn’t even include the ones coming from your work, your manager, or today’s depressed economy.
Too Much Sacrifice Is Not A Good Idea
Do you ever believe that you’re continually doing things for the other members of your family, leaving no time for yourself. You’re always on the run, taking the kids to school and athletic activities, or taking your parents to doctors and other geriatric services, but you never seem to have any time to stop, relax, put your feet up, and visit with friends, watch your favorite soap, or simply do nothing.
In fact, even if you could find a few minutes in your schedule to do such things, chances are you wouldn’t do them anyway, because to do so would cause you to feel as if you were ignoring your obligations and your responsiblities to your loved ones.
I used to think like that too – that I was always the one who was expected to give up my time, energy, job and pleasures in order to care for the extended family.
Priorities Determine Decisions
But, one night, watching the TV show, Baywatch – an episode where one of the lifeguards had swum out underneath a dock in very heavy seas, with the waves pounding against the posts of the jetty. The inexperienced lifeguard suddenly realized that the surf were so strong that they were forcing him and his rescue toward a decidely unpleasant impact with one of those pilings.
His first thought was that he ought to position his body between the injured swimmer and the pilings and take the full force of crash into the poles.
But, then he understood that if he allowed himself to take the hit, he might be knocked unconscious – or otherwise, seriously injured. If that were to happen, it was very likely that both of them would die.
Difficult Decisions & Unpopular Decisions
So, he rapidly came to the realization that if either of them had to get smashed against the dock, it would have to be the person he was rescuing. He needed to remain strong, and conscious, to make sure that they both would make it to shore, and to safety.
I learned something about priorities from that show, and have since applied it to my life in both personal and professional situations.
As selfish as it may seem, when the caregiving situation is so critical, it is important that the helper stay strong and healthy.
Not many of us are faced with the lifeguard’s difficult choice about who to permit to be dragged into the dock, but many of us are faced – frequently – with unpopular decisions about doing things for others or taking time for ourselves to rest, recuperate. and in general, to unwind from the unending stress of the helper’s days.
A Little “Selfishness” Is Appropriate
I recommend that you allow yourself the time required for yourself to keep your immune system healthy, to keep your outlook positive and your spirits sunny; if you don’t, you will not be helping your loved ones, but rather, you will simply add to the stressors that are already present.
The point of this narrative is that the caregiver must be a little bit selfish when it comes to ensuring his or her mental and physical health – and continuing ability to take care of the rest of the family.
So, be sure to take good care of yourself – and don’t feel guilty about it when you do.

Give yourself some well deserved time off.
You deserve it. Acknowledging your accomplishments, no matter how big or small, is an effort that is necessary before getting on to the next tasks and activities. It reduces stress and could even put you in a better mood for doing the next task.
make sure to give yourself a break.
You need it to be more focused. A ten to fifteen minute break during your work is necessary. Go visit a coffee shop nearby, take a quick walk, or do anything to get your mind off work, at least for a while. This is necessary to refresh and recharge. Believe it or not, you can also take some time at work and sit with your eyes closed as you visualize a peaceful landscape or a relaxing scene.
