Selecting the right fishing rig when you go fishing for catfish is very important. First you need to select the type of sinker you are going to use. for example if you are fishing a muddy or sandy mud bottom select an egg sinker. Your first step would be to slide your egg sinker up the line. Next tie a barrel swivel to the line. The barrel swivel serves as sinker stop. Next tie the end of your leader to the open eye on the barrel swivel. Make sure your leader has a number 1 to a 6/0 hook tied on the size depends on how large the catfish you are targeting and what type of live bait you are using. For example if I were using live bluegills for bait i would select a 5/0 hook. Last hook you bait to the hook and your slip sinker fishing rig is complete!

If you are fishing for game fish that are not line or weight sensitive such as large catfish you could use a slip sinker rig. The fixed sinker rig is designed to designed to to not move when a fish hits your bait. You fish this fishing rig what is called tight line. You want no slack in your line when you fish a fixed sinker rig. If your tip moves or if you line goes slack after a hit pick your pole up and real your line back tight. With the pole still in your hand wait for a second hit. If the hit comes set the hook imediately. When you are fishing with fixed sinker fishing rigs there are a number of sinker and hook variatons you can use and they will depend on what gamefish you are targeting and what type of water conditions you are fishing in.
Slip Sinker Fishing Rig
One of the most universal fishing rigs you will ever use is the slip sinker fishing rig. This rig has so many variations and can used to a variety of game fish species. The fundamentals of a slip sinker rig are vary simple. The rig is designed for game fish species that are very line sensitive and spook easily. When a fish picks up your live bait presentation they actually can mouth it and start moving away with you bait without detecting any live Resistance. When you see you line start to move, pick up your pole and real in the slack and get ready to set the hook. If the line starts to move, or continues to move set the hook. You can fish this rig in any water conditions with a few fishing tackle modifications designed specifically for the water condition you are fishing in.

A fixed bobber rig is designed so that the fish taking your bait feels very little resistance when they take your bait. The key to having a correctly balanced fixed bobber rig is to match a proper size split shot or jig size with the size of the bobber you use. You want the weight of your bait and the weight of the jig or split shot to be enough to just barely keep your bobber a float. When a fish takes your bait it feels no resistance from the bobber . Fixed bobber rigs are used alot when fishing for panfish and any gamefish that can be caught at shallow depths. The disadvantage of fixed bobber rigs is that you can only set the depth as deep as the length of pole you are using.
Slip bobber Fishing Rig
A slip bobber rig is designed to be used for adjustable deep depths that are much deeper then the length of your fishing rod. Slip bobber rigs are designed to be easy to cast. Slip bobbers use a bobber stop and a bead that will stop the bobber at a set depth. This type of rig can be used to catch small or large fish.
