This exciting pow wow has hundreds of Indian dancers and artist performing a fabulous celebration for the last 5 nights of July every year. It will be a wonderful way to see the most colorful and designer native clothing that anyone will ever see, a beautiful Nebraska attraction you shouldn’t miss.
The Ho-Chunk Indians were originally from Wisconsin but early in the 19th century the U.S. Government took the land they lived on and they forced them to move. It wasn’t just a one-time move, it was repeated over and over. They were first relocated to Iowa, then off to Minnesota and then moved to South Dakota where they were held captive in stockades until they managed to escape. They finally ended up in Nebraska where they were allowed to stay. Some of the tribes moved back to Wisconsin but the majority of them remained in Nebraska. They now live on the reservation (some of them) that is their own land.
The pow-wow is a celebration remembering Little Priest who was the last tribal chiefton. He not only was the chief of the tribe but also served in the United States military. Because of his service in the military he received a life ending wound and died in 1866. Today the powwow not only honors him but also all the Winnebago Indian veterans of war. The chief, Little Priest, believed in harmony among the people, he forgave the treatment the Indians had experienced from the government. He supported positive relationships between themselves, the settlers and the soldiers.
The Ho0Chunk Nation Pow Wow is the oldest Powwow in North America. The Pow Wow is a way to restore friendships, respect the history and the old ways and enjoy the fact that they can all gather together to enjoy the dancing and musicians of their heritage. It has been observed on an annual basis since 1866.
Visitors are welcome to attend and enjoy the festivities. Watch the dancing, apprecaite the sounds and share the food. If you have not had fried bread before be sure to try it, it’s wonderful.
The celebration is observed at Veteran’s Memorial Park, 1 1/4 miles east of Winnebago, Nebraska on US Hwy 75. Come out and experience the pow wow, even if you can only attend for one day it will be a memory you will treasure from your Nebraska travel.

Idea #1: There is a lot of history hidden beneath Boot Hill Cemetery in Sidney, Nebraska. The inception of Boot Hill Cemetery, at the time called Sidney Cemetery, was in 1868. The town of Sidney was small at that time, holding only five hundred residents. Generally, they were buried with their boots on, hence the name Boot Hill. The committee was then formed the following month, and soon after, the city council officially recognized The Sidney Boot Hill Restoration Committee.
Idea #2: The Rotunda incorporates a wagon wheel floor plan and houses the museum’s Native American artifacts and exhibits, as it shows the cultural differences of the Native Americans and pioneers. Present day Christmas includes a Christmas tree decorating contest, visit with Santa, and live contemporary holiday music. Children are always special at the Stuhr Museum with several grade appropriate field trips available with themes such as Families on the Farm and Early Transportation. Summer School classes are offered with subjects such as Pioneer Living and Overland Trails.
