If you plan on going live bait fishing on a regular basis for crappie it is a good idea to stock your tackle box with only the tackle you will need to make your crappie live bait fishing rigs.If you plan on only fishing crappie minnows than your tackle box may be quite small. But if plan on tipping artificial crappie jigs and spinners then you’re your tackle box and size will be much bigger.
To start with if you plan on fishing for crappie with a live bait such as small fathead crappie minnows. To fish with crappie minnows you will need a nice assortment of crappie Aberdeen gold hooks ranging in size from number 4 through number 1. Have at least 10 of each on hand. If you plan on fishing larger crappie minnows such as shiners then you will need 1/0 to 2/0 Aberdeen gold hooks. Again keep a minimum of 10 each on hand.
You will need a variety of crappie fishing bobbers that are designed to fish at a certain depth. You will need small fixed depth bobbers, I use a Styrofoam bobber that slides on your line and then you put a small wooden stick at the top of the bobber to keep the line from sliding through. You can move the bobber up and down the line you need to remove the stick first, then replace it once you are at your desired depth.
Or if you are fishing suspended crappies at deeper depths you will need an assortment of slip bobbers. Slip bobbers come in a assortment of different sizes and shapes. One of my favorite types for suspended crappie is a pencil shaped slip bobber. Make sure you size your slip bobber to the size of the live bait you plan on fishing with, and the sinker size you intend to use. If you are fishing deep water you will need more weight to get you bait down to the desired depth quickly. As a result you will need a larger slip bobber. You want your slip bobber to just barely stay afloat with your live bait and sinker attached so you you can notice the very slightest of crappie hits. You also do not want the crappies to feel any line resistance when they take your live bait presentation.
If you plan on fishing for crappies with any crappie jigs that you plan on tipping with live bait then you will need at least a selection different plain jigs in various sizes, from 1/64 ounce to 1/16 ounce. Have at least a quantity of 5 each of the different sizes. You will be able to cast the smaller jigs if you add a bobber.
You also will need to keep a spool of 4 to 8 pound test line in your tackle box for situations were you are fishing with ultra light crappie fishing tackle. You should also have a spool of 15lb test line in case you find an area to fish heavy brush or weed cover. It better to bend your Aberdeen hooks then break your line in these situations. A good quick fishing knot to use when you are crappie fishing is the Palomar knot. And this knot works well for any test line you will use.
Another very useful piece of crappie fishing tackle that works great for brushy or thick weed areas is the safety pin spinner and you should have a t least an assortment of 5 each in your tackle box. They are easy to use and assemble directly your existing crappie jigs. They not only ad some flash to your crappie live bait presentation but they also make your crappie fishing rig weedless. The safety pin spinner bait is also a good way to get the crappies attention on a slow fishing day. Remove any plastic from your jig and slide on a fathead crappie minnow and let the spinner bait do its work.

In my example above I did exactly that. I got lucky and hit on the right combination right away and when I caught my first three crappie within minutes I checked to see what they were eating sure enough they were feeding heavy on the small bluegill fry. This technique will work on any crappie waters you intend to fish. Don’t make the mistake and not use this important tip because it can be very powerful information on you next crappie fishing trip to this area.
One more important note when you are matching the hatch. Size and color are very important. If you are going to say fish only artificial jigs you need to match the size and coloration of the hatch. In my example above I chose a jig head that had a color similar to the color of the bluegill fry and the size was a 1/ 32 ounce jig size because the bluegill fry were very small. The safety pin spinner was used because the pound was weedy and the water was a bit discolored so I wanted my crappie fishing rig to have some flash so the crappie could see it, and hear the vibrations.

Now that you have selected your hook size it is time to rig your crappie minnow. You are probably think this is so trivial but rigging a minnow correctly can make the difference between catching crappie or going home empty handed. Jigging poles are manufacture in lengths of from 8 to 20ft but longer poles are somewhat awkward to use. A better selection would be a pole in the 10 to 12ft range.
When looking to purchase a good crappie fishing rig there are a few things that you need to consider, You need to make your selection based on the poles power rating and the poles action. When considering a power rating you need to understand that ultralight rods are designed that the ultralight rods are designed for line weights of 1 to 4 pound test line, and lures or jigs 1/64 to 1/16 ounce. These are the 2 different rod types that are commonly used as crappie fishing rigs. Make sure you match the rod power and action to the reel you select.
The next thing you need to consider when selecting your crappie fishing rig is the rod action. Action is the flexibility or stiffness that the rod has. A fast action rod will bend very little in fact if you used one of these rods when crappie fishing you would probably rip the hook right out of its lips. You do not want to select a fast action rod as one of your crappie fishing rigs.
A medium action rod is a common choice for walleye and small catfish. You can use a medium rod for crappie fishing if you are fishing crappie spinner baits but it probably is not a good choice if you intend to do allot of crappie jigging.

Crappie Minnow Setups
Crappie are a very curious species of fish and they love to attack schools of minnows to satisfy their amazing live bait appetite. The following minnow rig is designed to imitate a small school of minnows that is intended for a hungry crappie in waiting. If fished properly this small group of minnows can be amazingly successful, and a very productive way of filling your fish basket.
It is very important to have the right fishing equipment when fishing for crappie and just the right rod and reel combo is very important. You will need a small spin cast reel that is rated for 4 to 6lb test line, and a rod that is over 8ft long. (a typical fly rod makes a excellent crappie rod. I personally use a fly rod with a small spin cast reel set up with 10lb test fire line. The fire line is a braided line that has the strength of 10lb test but only the dia. of 4lb test line.
Steps To Success The “Crappie Minnow” Rigging Technique
Step#1 Get yourself (3) three small three way swivels that work for crappie fishing.
Step#2 Go to bass pro shop or other tackle shops that sell loose beads and spinner blades that rotate 360 degrees. Make sure you purchase the smallest you can find. These spinners make simulate a small bait fish an make excellent crappie minnow baits
Step#3 You will need to find some bass or egg sinkers that are 1/4oz. You can find them at any department store fishing tackle area or any local bait shop.
Step#4 You will need to purchase some 10lb fire line and load your spin cast reel. The best prices I have found are at bass pro shop.
Step#5 Get yourself 3 no. 1,1/0,2/0 Aberdeen gold crappie hooks and tie them to 3 pieces of fire line cut to 16” lengths using a Palomar knot. The length you want to end up at is 12 inches, so you need to trim the end opposite the hook.
Step#6 Cut (3) 8” inch pieces of fire line, do not tie anything on them at this time. These pieces will be used for spacing between each 3 way swivel, and leader.
Step#7 Pick up your crappie fishing rod and reel combo and click the release button on your reel and thread your fire line through the rod eyelets and out past the tip eye let approximately the length of the rod. This will make it easier to complete all your tackle tying.
Step#8 Tie on your first 3 way swivel so the eyelet is 90degrees from the top eyelet is on the left hand side.
Step#9 Round up (2) of the beads and (1) of the spinner blades from step five, and slide one bead up the 12” inch leader and then slide on a spinner blade spinner blade. Next slide a second bead up the 12” leader behind the spinner blade. Now tie the end opposite the Aberdeen gold crappie hook. And tie it to the 90deg eyelet that is on the left hand side.
Step#10 Now pick up one of your 8” connecting pieces of fire line and tie one end to last remaining open eyelet of the first three way swivel , then tie the other end to the top eyelet of the second three way swivel, but make sure the open eyelet 90degs from the top is on the right hand side before you tie. When you have completed the tying process you should have approximately 6 inches between the two eyelets.
Step#11 Pick up one of the 12” leaders you made in step 5 and slide one bead up the line. Next slide one of the spinner blades up the line behind the first bead. Next, Slide another bead up the line behind the spinner blade. Now, tie the end of the leader without the Aberdeen gold crappie hook to the free eyelet on the second 3 way swivel that is on the right side 90degrees from the top.
Step#12 Tie one end of the 8” pieces of fire line you cut in step 6 to the bottom eyelet of the second 3 way swivel, then tie the other end of the line two your third 3 way swivel. Make sure the open eyelet that is 90degrees from the top on the second 3 way swivel is located on the right hand side. After your tying is done, you want to end up with approximately 6” of space between the second and third eyelet.
Step#13 Pick up the last 12” leader you made in step 5 and slide one bead up the line. Next slide one of the spinner blades up the line behind the first bead. Next, Slide another bead up the line behind the spinner blade. Now, tie the end of the leader without the hook to the free eyelet on the third 3 way swivel that is on the right side 90degrees from the top.
Step#14 Now pick up the last 8” connecting pieces of fire line and tie one end to last remaining open eyelet of the Third three way swivel , and the other end to the 1/4oz bass sinker.
